Sabarimala women entry highlights

Portals of the Sabarimala Temple will be opened today. As this is a critical judgement by supreme court to allow entry for women devotees to the great shrine of Sabarimala, a total 1000 security personnel, 800 men and 200 women, deployed at Nillekal and Pampa base. 500 security personnel deployed at Sannidhanam.

Just looking at the speciality and history of the shrine, Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage centre located at the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District of Kerala. It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world with an estimated 17-20 million devotees visiting every year. In 1991, Kerala High Court restricted entry of women above the age of 10 and below the age of 50 from Sabarimala Shrine as they were of the menstruating age.

A protest was held by the women community against gender discrimination of not allowing women to the Temple. An argument was done in SC that, in front of god both men and women are equal.’. Supreme court opposed the ban on women entry and sent the verdict on 28th September 2018 having said that discrimination against women on any grounds, even religious is unconstitutional. Against to verdict, protesters threatened for mass suicide. Security personnels already in action and started screening vehicles.
In spite of all the hurdles and with the support of tight security, women devotees will enter Sabarimala today.

Meanwhile Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan commented in regards to the order that, ‘We will not allow any one take law & order in their hands. The government will ensure facilities to devotees to go to #SabarimalaTemple and offer prayers. Government will not submit a review petition. We’ve said in court that we’ll implement the order’.

The temple head priest Kandararu Rajeevaru stated that ‘I am here with the items for the temple; my blessing are with all the devotees’.
